Opportunities for community outreach!
by Pam White, LPC
Fellow Biofeedbackers:
I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity for each of you to spread
the word in your own community about biofeedback and its benefits. My
daughters are both in Girl Scouts. I have been able to help the troops
out by offering workshops related to stress and biofeedback to not only
each of their troops, but to the surrounding area as well. As I looked
through the badge requirements for the older troop, I was amazed to see
that it actually listed talking to a biofeedback professional as one of
the options for the badge requirement. To me, this said a lot about how
far the field of biofeedback has come in being recognized by those
outside of our field. If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity,
why not consider offering a 1 or 2 hour "workshop" some Saturday morning
or one weekday afternoon to your local scouts that would allow them to
complete the badge? The requirements are fairly simple and are all
focused on learning how stress effects us individually and how we can
use better coping skills. I'm sure the Boy Scouts have similar
opportunities as well. This could be a simple way to give a few hours a
year and make a big difference in the lives of many young people.
If you want more information on the badges, or how to reach your local
Scouting organization please feel free to send an
EMAIL to the BST office.
Meet Past President and Current Board Member, Lora Chandler, LPC
When I was asked by our president, JD, to write a biography for the
membership, I thought to myself, O Lord, what could I possibly write
that was interesting - something no one knew about me. I have decided to
start with what I am very proud of. Something I have no reason to claim
as a personal achievement. I am a 9th generation Texan. Thanks to my
mother who did all the genealogy leg-work, I can claim the status of a
true Texan. In fact, I am happy to say that this is my country. I left
Texas at the age of 17 ½ to go to school, first in Arkansas and then in
NYC. I lived in New York City, Brooklyn and Manhattan, Westchester
county, and Dutchess county for a total of almost 18 years. At one point
I was as much a New Yorker as a Texan - at least as far as the amount of
time I lived in each place. In fact, I married there and bore two Yankee
children much to the chagrin of my husband's family in Mississippi. But
when we moved back to Texas, I knew I was home.
It took me 13 years to get my undergraduate degree in psychology
after going back to school at the age of 32. I stopped and started
depending on what the children needed and finances would allow. I began
at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY and ended at UT
Dallas. I then went on to get my masters at UNT where I was introduced
to biofeedback, first as a client, and later as a student of this
wonderful discipline. After graduation, I worked in pain management,
spent time at a brain injury rehab, and then went to work for Baylor
University Medical Center in Dallas. There was a comprehensive pain
program in its infancy and I wanted to be part of it. Today I am at the
Baylor Richardson Pain Management Center and I do stretch group,
education groups, counseling and biofeedback training. I love it and
hope they will let me stay until I can no longer move or think. Talking
I think I will always be able to do. I am your past president and feel
fortunate to be a part of you all.
Respectfully, Lora Chandler, M. Ed, LPC
